Grafton urges residents to keep leaves out of streets
Grafton's Conservation Commission is asking residents to keep leaves out of streets and storm drains this fall, warning that washed-in leaves release nutrients that feed harmful algae blooms downstream.
The Town of Grafton announced Oct. 16 that its Conservation Commission is urging residents to keep leaves out of streets this fall to protect local waterways.
According to the announcement, leaves left in the street are more than a mess: when they wash into storm drains, they release nutrients that feed harmful algae blooms downstream.
The commission recommended several steps for residents. They should rake early and often, compost or mulch leaves only on grassy areas, sweep leaves off driveways and sidewalks, and keep leaf piles away from catch basins.
"A little cleanup goes a long way in protecting Grafton's waterways," the announcement said.
