Grafton Library Trustees Approve Child Safety Policy, Cover $14,177 Budget Overage

Grafton Library Trustees adopted an updated child safety policy allowing seventh graders to use the library unaccompanied, approved a $14,176.99 draw on state aid to cover a personnel budget overage, and passed an updated meeting room policy at their July 29 meeting. Library Director Katrina reported the personnel overage — originally projected at $33,000 — was reduced through staff vacancies and tighter shift-coverage practices. Trustees also approved roughly $1,100 from state aid for 1,500 branded library pens at 69 cents each for outreach events including Grafton Day on August 21 and school curriculum nights.

The child safety policy, as amended, establishes that any student entering seventh grade or above may be unaccompanied in the library, with children ages 10 through 12 in sixth grade or below permitted throughout the library while a guardian remains in the building. John Kelly, chair of the Charter Review Committee's Subcommittee on Article 3, appeared in public comment to say his panel found the charter language governing the Board of Library Trustees "well-written" with no substantive proposals for change.
